Sulzer is optimizing pump reliability and performance

The offshore industry faces two main challenges: maximizing production within the limits of the reservoir, and minimizing operational costs while maintaining the safety of the platform. Pumps form one of the main groups of equipment that influence the outcome of both challenges and they require expert knowledge to ensure continued reliability and performance.

Murray Wilson, Sulzer UK argues that in each case, industry engineering expertise and commercial innovation are required to deliver these goals. Furthermore, the capital expenditure to improve reliability is most often far outweighed by the costs incurred by an unexpected failure and the subsequent costs of lost production. By taking a proactive approach and involving an expert maintenance provider, platform operators can deliver significant benefits to the business in the long term.

Centrifugal Pump Minute

Griswold has developed an educational video blog called the “Centrifugal Pump Minute.”

The first video is about Determining available system NPSHA. James Farley, Griswold Product Manager, reviews how to determine available system NPSHA for a pump that is installed and operational. Using the calculation needed to determine NPSHA, James presents example tests that will establish system performance and possible pump cavitation.

Impeller improves suction characteristics in high-pressure pumps

KSB experts developed a special impeller for its Movitec multistage high-pressure pumps. This new impeller significantly improves these pumps’ suction characteristics (NPSH value).

It proves its worth particularly in applications with critical inlet conditions (e.g. boiler feed applications) as well as applications in which the pump is required to take in water from low-lying tanks or at higher temperatures. Under these conditions, a pressure drop in the intake area may cause cavitation to occur in the first pump stage. This can result in excessive wear of pump parts or motor bearings as well as a reduced service life of the pump due to damaged parts and an unbalanced hydraulic system.

The new impeller is offered as an alternative to the standard product.

Low flow with high head pump applications

Side Channel Pumps are self-priming pumps that operate in low NPSH conditions & have the ability to handle up to 50% entrained gas. These pumps run at very low flow rates, while generating medium to high differential pressures.

Bungartz: A functional pump model at Chemtech, Mumbai

Chemtech World Expo – February 14-17, 2017 – is one of the largest events for the chemical industry. 600 exhibitors from 20 countries expect up to 40,000 visitors. At the same time eight international conferences and about 150 speakers are offered. In the German pavilion, the German community stand, organized by the VDMA, the company Bungartz will present the concepts of its problem-solver pumps at stand C6A, which also have a high intrinsic safety:

Sulzer Extends the High-Efficiency Water Pump Range

smd_small_fullSulzer introduces an extension to the SMD axially split pump range towards lower flows and implements a higher level of standardization for cost-effective solutions and short delivery times. The SMD pump range is developed for a wide range of high-volume flow applications where raw, clean, sea, or brackish water is pumped. Such applications are water abstraction, water transport, desalination, water treatment, supply, and distribution. The pumps can also be used for firefighting, drainage, or distribution of heating and cooling media in residential and industrial systems.

Sundyne: New low NPSHr, high-flow pump

sundyneThe Sundyne LMV-803Lr is an API 610 compliant pump available in either OH3 or OH5 motor mounting configuration that provides ultra-low NPSHr performance – approximately 5 ft (1.5 m), across the entire performance range – for flows to 800 GPM (180 m³ / hr) and heads to 1,000 ft (305 m).

The ultra-low NPSHr allows the pump to be installed at grade level, eliminating the expense of installation in a pit and performing maintenance in a confined space. The vertical design is ideal for use in refineries, NGL, petrochemical and chemical plants, as well as handling light hydrocarbon handling services, such as bottom pumps for de-ethanizers.
