Sulzer is optimizing pump reliability and performance

Thursday, September 20th, 2018 von admin

The offshore industry faces two main challenges: maximizing production within the limits of the reservoir, and minimizing operational costs while maintaining the safety of the platform. Pumps form one of the main groups of equipment that influence the outcome of both challenges and they require expert knowledge to ensure continued reliability and performance.

Murray Wilson, Sulzer UK argues that in each case, industry engineering expertise and commercial innovation are required to deliver these goals. Furthermore, the capital expenditure to improve reliability is most often far outweighed by the costs incurred by an unexpected failure and the subsequent costs of lost production. By taking a proactive approach and involving an expert maintenance provider, platform operators can deliver significant benefits to the business in the long term.

Technical Paper: How to – Vibration Analysis

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018 von admin

Fig. 1 Analyzing vibration measurements on Omnitrend Center taken by Vibscanner 2.

It’s not a secret, that vibration on machines causes severe issues – not only on a long term perspective. Vibration, caused by any issue is the natural enemy of any rotating machine such as a pump. Due to the latest handheld high-speed data collector Vibscanner by Pruftechnik vibration of all kind on all kind of machine can be detected during the maintenance routine.

With the special software Omnitrend Center the measurement results of Vibscanner 2 (Fig. 1) can be analyzed deeply and used for an entire machine health program. But what measurements does the new high-speed data collector Vibscanner 2 deliver, how do you interpret these and how can you react on these measurements? Let us give you a quick kick-start into vibration analysis to help keep your pumps alive.

Pump field services

Large pumps, such as those operated in the

  • oil and gas,
  • power generation and
  • water industries

perform a crucial role and represent a significant investment by the owner. Safeguarding these assets and maintaining efficiency and reliability are vital for the continued productivity of the application. Very often, when it comes to maintenance, the choice is between the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or an independent service provider (ISP), but John Murray describes here that it is possible to have the best of both worlds.

KSB at Anuga FoodTec 2018 in Cologne

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018 von admin

In the limelight at the KSB Anuga FoodTec trade fair stand is, among others, the newly developed concept of a maintenance workstation for hygienic food pumps only. The so-called LSA (Life Sciences Applications) hygiene workstation is equipped with stainless steel surfaces, work benches that are easy to clean, and tools and clothing for use in this workstation only. Also, all lubricants supplied are FDA-approved. At the KSB stand in Cologne, such a workstation will be demonstrated by a service engineer performing maintenance work on a hygienic pump live at regular intervals.

Sulzer doubles capacity of high voltage testing to improve repair times

Thursday, January 11th, 2018 von admin

Performance testing of high voltage motors and generators is usually carried out to determine benchmark data following a major repair. However, increasingly, customers are requiring this information as part of a problem diagnosis or to verify performance figures for a component when its essential data has been lost. To keep up with growing demand, Sulzer has made a major investment at its Falkirk Service Center (Scotland) that will enable the test-bed load capacity to be doubled.

Until now, the Falkirk site has used a 1,250 kVA diesel generator that operates through two step-up transformers to provide 3.3 – 11 kV via high voltage switchgear to the test cell. This setup ensures a reliable power source for testing that is not affected by local demand on the power grid. The new investment will add a 2,000 kVA and a 700 kVA generator to the site that will be synchronized through a 4000A LV switchboard, as well as a new 2,500 kVA transformer, that will double the capacity of the test bed.

Sulzer: Repair of variable speed drives reduces costs and downtime

Thursday, April 20th, 2017 von admin

As the legislation surrounding the efficiency of electric motors continues to tighten, the volume of variable speed drives (VSDs) in service increases. Often specified by the motor manufacturer as part of the original installation – or retrofitted to improve efficiency – the drive contains both hardware and software that is designed to work with a motor in a specific application. So, what happens if the drive ceases to operate? Brian Park, Regional Sales Manager for Scotland at Sulzer, looks at the advancing technology and the maintenance processes that need to keep pace.
