IE5 motor with electronic speed control for the IEC market

WEG developed electronically commutated motors (WECM) for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications in the IEC market at this year’s edition of SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg (Germany). The energy-efficient permanent magnet motors with aluminium housings in frame size IEC 80 cover the power range from 0.12 W to 1.1 kW, with a choice of rated speeds: 1,500, 1,800 and 3,000 rpm. Integrated electronic speed control enables the drive units (motor and variable speed drive) to achieve market-leading efficiency levels. In addition, the low-noise, compact WECM motors fulfil all relevant IEC and HVAC standards. Easy programming and outstanding efficiency make them a cost-effective solution for pump, fan and ventilator manufacturers.

Sulzer to be distributor of MV variable speed drives in North America

Sulzer’s extensive network of service centers throughout North America will provide expert, local support from one of the world’s leading independent repair specialists of electromechanical equipment.

The new agreement will see Sulzer provide both sales and technical support for MV drives with a focus on the oil and gas industry in the United States and Canada. The company’s experienced field service teams offer expert support on site, while the local service centers are equipped with modern repair facilities to ensure any downtime is minimized. Siemens extends synchronous-reluctance drive systems

Siemens is extending its portfolio of Simotics synchronous-reluctance motors to include the two new shaft heights, AH90 and AH225. With these new additions, the company is addressing calls from renowned manufacturers of pumps.

The motors are available in a power range of 0.55 to 45 kW, and now also with rated speeds of 1,500 and 3,000 min1. In conjunction with the recently launched Sinamics Reluctance Control License, precise encoderless closed-loop torque control is possible down to a standstill. The license enables field-oriented (vector) closed-loop control even when at a standstill – reliably eliminating the possibility of the synchronous motor “stalling” at any time even if the load inertia is not known.

Efficiency comparison pumping system

An increasing number of pumps are now being run using speed control in order to be able to define the dynamic volume flow. The pump’s quadratic characteristic causes the motor load to decrease rapidly at lower speeds, which results in the level of efficiency decreasing significantly. Using the diagrams, it can be seen that the ideal workload for the existing asynchronous motor is not reached, due to operation at partial loads (approx. 30%) and speeds (75%).

If the pump is then equipped with a PMSM motor that has an extended efficiency range including partial load operation, the level of efficiency can be increased by approx. 12% in this example and savings of more than EUR 250 per pump per year can be achieved (depending on the number of hours‘ operation per year).

Siemens: I/O extension module for converters

For the smallest converter in its portfolio, the Sinamics V20, Siemens is now offering an extension module for the capture and output of digital and analog signals. The Sinamics V20 I/O extension module is mounted on the converter using Plug&Play technology, and provides two additional input and output interfaces, each for 400 volts., increasing both the flexibility and the scope of the Sinamics V20. Using connecting ports on the front and back, the extension module can also be combined with additional accessories from the Sinamics V20 portfolio. These include for instance the BOP (Basic Operator Panel) and the BOP interface module.

KSB: New drives reduce variant complexity of pumps

At this year’s Hannover Messe KSB is presenting a new, smart drive solution for fixed speed pumps. With the new MyFlow Drive, which is fully compatible with Industry 4.0, the fixed speed levels at the motor can be set to individual requirements. This provides the user with planning reliability as the flow rate of the pumps can be increased or decreased quickly and easily.

KTR: Torque measuring shaft combining four measurements in one

DATAFLEX_mit_RADEX-NCKTR developed a measuring system calculating both angle of rotation and rotating direction in addition to torque and speed for the first time. The new Dataflex series covers a measuring range from 10 to 1,000 Nm and is scheduled to be extended to 5,000 Nm in 2015.

The new precision measuring shaft will rely on the approved measuring principle via strain gauges combined with the latest electronical components. Having a sampling rate of 10 Hz, the system allows for measuring serious torque peaks on highly dynamic drives. The data transmission resistant to interferences operates digitally with a resolution of 24 Bit having a measuring inaccuracy of 0.1 per cent of the terminal value only. The signal provided is extremely low-noise.
