Technical Paper: High-performance carbon – the service life extender for pumps

Slides assume the main job of generating the vacuum – more than 30,000 hours of durability were achieved using a new material

Whether slide bearings, sliders or mechanical seals – all these components are exposed to high loads on a daily basis and, therefore, wear out. With innovative materials, however, maintenance intervals and the service life of pumps and seals can be extended considerably, as evidenced by developments in carbon materials.

Selecting the right material determines the service life of machines, units, and systems. Conventional materials often reach their load capacity limits, especially in pumps and mechanical seals. Schunk Carbon Technology develops and produces materials for seal rings, slide bearings, and pump components made of carbon and silicon carbide. These innovative materials particularly excel in the areas of abrasion resistance, sliding capability, media resistance, and temperature resistance. Carbon in the form of graphite also has the characteristic property of self-lubrication. All in all, exactly the features required in demanding industrial environments. “In practice, their use leads to a significant increase in service life and extended service intervals,” says Thomas Kräuter, Sales Director of the Mechanical Carbon Industry at Schunk. It is not enough to simply replace a material; many years of expertise are required. Three current development projects demonstrate the path from material to functioning components, leading to new materials that considerably extend the service life of pumps, seals and the like.

An ‘alignment free’ pump

It is imperative that pumping systems are designed and operated in a way that reduces the amount of harmful stress placed on components. One area that has been difficult to achieve and maintain is shaft alignment. Failure to properly align a pump’s mating shafts will eventually lead to challenges associated with shaft fatigue and failure, resulting in compromised pumping-system uptime, reliability and safety. This can then result in costly maintenance or even knock the pump out of service and halt production.

Focused on this problem, Blackmer developed GNX Series sliding vane pumps, which are called by the manufacturer “industry’s first alignment-free”. It is a reduced-speed pump for use in both portable and stationary applications.

Optimizing critical transfer tasks

Processing fish, lard and vegetable oils is the main business of Olvea Group in the small town of Fecamp, close to the English Channel in the northwest of France. These oils that were arriving at the plant were to be used for specific end products. This included the creation of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, human food and animal feed, as well as various technical uses, such as the building of lasers and as lubricants for leather and metal work.

These processes require strict purity for the oils as they move from transport truck to storage tank to 330-gallon intermediate bulk containers (IBC) and 50-gallon drums, meaning that no cross-contamination could be tolerated. Additionally, because of the high value of the oils, any products that were left in the transport truck, storage tank or hoses after the transfer process was completed would essentially be lost during the necessary cleaning process.

The new GNX and GNXH Series Sliding Vane Pumps are designed to handle a wide range of non-corrosive, non-abrasive industrial liquids and petroleum products. Manufactured with a large operating range, these pumps offer high flows and high pressure. They are currently available in 2- and 2.5-inch flanged port sizes. Larger 3- and 4-inch flanged port sizes will be released later this year. Combined, these sizes provide flow capacities ranging from 20 to 500 gpm (76 to 1,893 l/min) at working pressures up to 175 psi (12.1 bar).

The XH pumps are designed to handle a wide range of non-corrosive and non-abrasive industrial liquids and petroleum products The NPH pumps are built for handling viscous or shear-sensitive fluids. Both models are available in 2”, 2.5”, 3” and 4” (51 mm, 64 mm, 76 mm and 102 mm) sizes.

Blackmer: 4-Inch Sliding Vane Pump

Blackmer_XLW (2)This 4-inch pump is an extension of Blackmer’s XLW Series. These pumps have been designed to perform in the handling and transfer of a variety of abrasive liquids, including oxide primers, inks and paints, where wear-resistance is critical to pump operation. These pumps have also shown to be successful in applications such as vertical and horizontal bead mills, solvent recovery, tank-bottom recirculation, heat-treater supply, enhanced oil recovery, and crude- or hot-oil transfer.

The new XLW4A model features hardened rotor and shaft, liner, end discs and vanes for long life and optimized wear-resistance. These hardened internal parts allow the pump to be used with liquids featuring suspended abrasive particles up to 250 microns in size and at a concentration up to 25%.
