Impeller improves suction characteristics in high-pressure pumps

KSB experts developed a special impeller for its Movitec multistage high-pressure pumps. This new impeller significantly improves these pumps’ suction characteristics (NPSH value).

It proves its worth particularly in applications with critical inlet conditions (e.g. boiler feed applications) as well as applications in which the pump is required to take in water from low-lying tanks or at higher temperatures. Under these conditions, a pressure drop in the intake area may cause cavitation to occur in the first pump stage. This can result in excessive wear of pump parts or motor bearings as well as a reduced service life of the pump due to damaged parts and an unbalanced hydraulic system.

The new impeller is offered as an alternative to the standard product.

Pressure transmitters for remote commissioning of functional safety

Siemens presented Sitrans P320/420, the first pressure transmitter on the market to feature remote safety handling reducing commissioning time in applications requiring functional safety.

Via Simatic Process Device Manager (PDM) the safety integrity level (SIL) devices will be commissioned: rather than manually attending to each individual device across the facility, operators can commission transmitters from the control room. This next generation of pressure transmitters was developed according to IEC 61508 standard for the use in SIL 2/3.

Metal seated ball valves for up to 420 bar and 450 °C

The patented design of the so-called ‘Dissolution’ ball valve offers optimized distribution of forces and loads in the ball valve, so that they only occur where they are actually needed. This means that the ball valve made by AS-Schneider can be actuated easily even under high pressures up to 420 bar.

The forces needed to maintain the tightness between ball seat and valve body are only directed onto the corresponding graphite seal rings (see figure).

Hygienic pump for filtration systems with up to 80 bar

Representing a specific evolution of Fristam FP centrifugal pumps, the FPH range combines all the construction benefits of the standard range, including open impellers and flow-optimised pumping channel, with the suitability for use under high system pressure and with high volumetric flows. What is more, FPH pumps transport media with a viscosity of up to 800 mPa s especially in membrane filtration systems.

New plunger pump head reaches up to more than 1,000 bar

The plunger pumps feature an integrated gear, which enables very compact construction with maximum efficiency.

For the purpose of upgrading a cracker in a Chinese refinery a total of five plunger pump skids should be brought into operation by Lewa. Those in charge of the project opted for three triplex and two quintuplex plunger pumps in accordance with the API 674 standard. These pumps are equipped with the new KMC-L pump head with reduced clearance volume. This head consists of a single forging: The suction manifold is integrated as a result, allowing for a reduction in the sealing surface and thus in any potential leak points. An additional advantage is the fact that the suction side can be designed to handle backpressure, eliminating the need for a safety valve in the suction line. The new design makes it possible to realize pressures up to 1,075 bar. All pumps in use have been produced in Germany and mounted to a complete system in the Chinese plant.

These plunger pumps have a drive output of 260 kW and a flow rate of 25 m3/h. The suction pressure loss of the pump heads is very low, therefore a low suction pressure is needed and it is often possible to operate without a booster pump.

Hygienic high-pressure pumps for dairies

Gea presented its first high-pressure pump for membrane filtrations such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration in dairies at Anuga FoodTec 2018. The Hilge Hygia H is designed for system pressures up to 64 bar with outstanding cleanability characteristics and a modular motor connection.

The new high-pressure pump is based on the Hygia premium range of hygienic pumps, which has been proven for decades and is suitable for a large number of viscous fluids and applications as a result of its high surface quality and adaptability. It is designed to pump fluids as well as homogeneous media containing air or gas and withstands a system pressure of 64 bar. “40 bar is standard in the dairy industry”, says Martin Zickler, product manager for hygienic pumps at Gea.

Carbon dioxide is used particularly in the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry for extracting natural substances, aromas, fats, oils, waxes, polymers, enzymes and colourants in their supercritical physical state. For despite its bad reputation as a greenhouse gas, CO2 is a natural and environmentally-friendly solvent which has advantages over synthetic and harmful media such as n-hexane when it comes to sustainability.

Oscillating displacement pumps are ideal for supercritical CO2 extraction.

Almatec: High-Pressure Pump Series

Almatec-AHD_AHS SeriesThis new high-pressure pump series AHD/AHS are developed for applications up to 15 bar (218 psig) such as filter press applications.

The “D” in AHD stands for Duplex, which means the reinforcement of the drive pressure is more than 2:1 by the internal pressure boosting stage. This is achieved thanks to a maximum drive pressure of 7 bar (100 psig), which allows the AHD to build up discharge pressures up to 15 bar (218 psig). AHD Series pumps are available in three sizes (AHD 15, 25 and 40) with maximum capacities of 4, 10 and 20 m3/h (17, 44 and 87 gpm).

The new AHS Series, which does not include an internal pressure booster, features an extremely rugged housing making it suitable for higher discharge pressures. The “S” in AHS stands from Simplex, meaning the drive pressure is transferred to the medium in a ration of 1:1.
