An increasing number of pumps are now being run using speed control in order to be able to define the dynamic volume flow. The pump’s quadratic characteristic causes the motor load to decrease rapidly at lower speeds, which results in the level of efficiency decreasing significantly. Using the diagrams, it can be seen that the ideal workload for the existing asynchronous motor is not reached, due to operation at partial loads (approx. 30%) and speeds (75%).

If the pump is then equipped with a PMSM motor that has an extended efficiency range including partial load operation, the level of efficiency can be increased by approx. 12% in this example and savings of more than EUR 250 per pump per year can be achieved (depending on the number of hours‘ operation per year).

Croke Park is a major Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) sports venue located in Dublin that hosts events for a number of sports. Croke Park has been at the heart of Irish sporting life for over a hundred years, it is not only an iconic landmark but also the third largest stadium in Europe.

Since 1884 the site has been used primarily by the GAA to host Gaelic games, most notably the annual All-Ireland finals in Gaelic Football and Hurling. In honour of Archbishop Thomas Croke, one of the first GAA’s first patrons, the stadium was renamed to Croke Park.

KSB: High-efficiency motor with integrated frequency inverter

Prototype demonstrates potentia: The KSB Group has finished the prototype of a super-compact high-efficiency motor with an integrated frequency inverter. The 22-kW synchronous reluctance motor is a prototype featuring new semiconductor technology that provides completely new cooling management for eliminating heat from power electronics.

By integrating the frequency inverter into the motor, developers were able to reduce the unit volume by over 25 percent compared with the traditional design.


New inline single stage centrifugal pump range

The new SIL pump range was developed by Sulzer to meet the process requirements in various general and industrial applications. The SIL pump range is developed for pumping mainly clean and slightly contaminated liquids, viscous liquids up to 250 cSt, and fibrous slurries up to a consistency of 1%. The hydraulic design ensures efficient pumping with a low NPSHr (net positive suction head required) across the whole pump range.

The inline design together with the monoblock construction makes the SIL pump compact, rigid and reliable. The pump is available either with an integrated motor or with a standard IEC motor. SIL pumps are easy and fast to install both in vertical and in horizontal positions, and they require only a small installation space.

With the use of the permanent magnet technology, oddesse pumps and motors factory developed an energy-efficient pumping system to support water supply companies to sustainably reduce energy consumption and thus contribute to the protection of the environment.

In the past, the efficiency of pump systems was often calculated by solely considering the efficiency of the pump. The efficiency of the motor, on the other hand, which is determined by the ratio between the electrical input and the mechanical output, has been largely ignored. However, the overall efficiency of the complete pumping system has an impact on the energy costs, which, as the decisive factor, account for more than 80% in the efficiency analysis. By optimizing the overall system, the greatest savings in electricity costs can be achieved.

An Australian company that specialises in both on-site and off-site pump refurbishment is finding that energy efficiency is an important driver in its refurbishment packages – and has included Vesconite bushings as part of its energy-reducing refurbishment package.

FITT Resources’ Daniel Hechter says that electricity costs in Australia, at 25+ AUS c/kWh, are among the highest costs globally.

As a result, when the company retrofits 30 to 35-year-old pumps, besides increasing the life of a pump, there is a focus on increasing the energy efficiency of the pump. The company’s retrofitting is programme orientated and includes a number of interventions to in-crease energy efficiency by ensuring that flow is better and that less electricity is used.
