Sulzer in Glasgow Sets the Standard in Maintenance and Repairs

Increasing pressure to reduce costs and optimise performance is causing many industries to reassess the way in which they tackle maintenance issues. Sulzer’s Glasgow facility has been quick to expand the capabilities and expertise of its staff to ensure additional benefits for customers and help meet these demands.

Scott Tyre took on the Glasgow service centre manager’s role in early 2017, after joining Sulzer as Contracts Manager in June 2016. He comments: “The Glasgow Service Centre is continuously improving to keep pace with its customers’ demands and the staff pride themselves in delivering the best possible technical service. Our challenge is to provide expert engineering support along with concise customer communication and dialogue, 100% of the time.”

Simplified servicing in beneficiation plant

Until January 2017, a copper beneficiation plant in Zambia was using pumps from six different manufacturers, including units from Netzsch. Attributable to the large number of different models, this resulted in a steadily growing inventory of similar spare parts and maintenance procedures. Thereby, the effort and costs for necessary maintenance of the pumps were constantly increasing as a result. Following a thorough review of the reliability and service life of its pumps, the plant operator decided to simplify its spare parts inventory and maintenance – and only use pumps from Netzsch as a single supplier.

The Zambian company replaced 36 pumps for polymer applications and saved 1 million dollars by reducing its spare parts inventory as well.

Open University Study Programme for Pump Engineers

Next English programme starts in March 2018

The programme is an academic distance-learning study course with only two classroom courses to be attended (two weeks each). The free time management allows the participants to define their own pace of progress within the programme which corresponds to a time equivalent of approximately 400 hours. The course “Certified Energy Consultants for Pumps and Pump Systems” is integrated into the programme. Advantages:

Technical Paper: Pump refurbishment package focuses on energy efficiency

An Australian company that specialises in both on-site and off-site pump refurbishment is finding that energy efficiency is an important driver in its refurbishment packages – and has included Vesconite bushings as part of its energy-reducing refurbishment package.

FITT Resources’ Daniel Hechter says that electricity costs in Australia, at 25+ AUS c/kWh, are among the highest costs globally.

As a result, when the company retrofits 30 to 35-year-old pumps, besides increasing the life of a pump, there is a focus on increasing the energy efficiency of the pump. The company’s retrofitting is programme orientated and includes a number of interventions to in-crease energy efficiency by ensuring that flow is better and that less electricity is used.

Sulzer: Repair of variable speed drives reduces costs and downtime

As the legislation surrounding the efficiency of electric motors continues to tighten, the volume of variable speed drives (VSDs) in service increases. Often specified by the motor manufacturer as part of the original installation – or retrofitted to improve efficiency – the drive contains both hardware and software that is designed to work with a motor in a specific application. So, what happens if the drive ceases to operate? Brian Park, Regional Sales Manager for Scotland at Sulzer, looks at the advancing technology and the maintenance processes that need to keep pace.

Predictive Maintenance for Process Control

Manufacturing, utilities, and oil & gas companies have been gathering troves of raw data since well before the Internet of Things was a thing. For decades, machines like pumps have collected big analog data about voltage, motion, sound, acceleration, vibration, and more at the farthest reaches of the network. But industries have never had the compute power and technology to process that data and turn it into real-time, data-driven decisions at the “edge” (on premise, away from the data center and closer to the “things”) —until now.

Netzsch: Maintenance of progressing cavity pumps with minimum effort

Explosionsbild FSIPNetzsch has developed the “Full Service in Place” (FSIP) concept for pump systems – constituting an inconspicuous but essential process element in many applications. This makes interventions in the pump equipment possible without dismantling from the piping. This approach has proven itself in practice already for several years with the Tornado T2 rotary lobe pumps, and a FSIP version of the progressing cavity pump will now be introduced as well. The new design saves time on inspection, repair and cleaning work while even reducing the required installation space.

IN-1000 improves safety while reducing operating costs. The core of the system is a software program developed by Allweiler.
The new Smart Platform can be used in straightforward condition monitoring to complex monitoring activities. This includes operational monitoring of several pumps for simultaneous fulfillment of safety and operating-cost requirements. Examples include monitoring of pressure, temperature, leaks, and vibrations. The system may also be expanded with standard industrial sensors.
