Sulzer in Glasgow Sets the Standard in Maintenance and Repairs

Increasing pressure to reduce costs and optimise performance is causing many industries to reassess the way in which they tackle maintenance issues. Sulzer’s Glasgow facility has been quick to expand the capabilities and expertise of its staff to ensure additional benefits for customers and help meet these demands.

Scott Tyre took on the Glasgow service centre manager’s role in early 2017, after joining Sulzer as Contracts Manager in June 2016. He comments: “The Glasgow Service Centre is continuously improving to keep pace with its customers’ demands and the staff pride themselves in delivering the best possible technical service. Our challenge is to provide expert engineering support along with concise customer communication and dialogue, 100% of the time.”

What will the pump of the future look like?

Few components in plant and equipment engineering are as steeped in tradition as the pump. But how does this fit in with the age of digitalisation? And is it even possible to design a hydraulic element that is fit for Industry 4.0? KSB has been reconciling these two worlds successfully for some time now.

KSB has always focused primarily on the optimisation of pumps – knowing the exact load profile and tuning the pump to the operating point. This is borne out by the sheer number of different pump casings and materials used and the impeller adjustment options available. However, conditions can change during the life of a pump and it often happens that a pump no longer runs at the optimum operating point. This also applies to newly installed pumps. For years now, KSB experts have therefore been investigating how to optimise pumps more easily without using complex analytics or even having to replace the pump.

Vertical gearmotors in pump stations

To prevent the city of New Orleans something like the Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded approximately $615 million for the New Orleans Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project to keep the city’s three main drainage outfall canals from being overwhelmed in future storms. In these pump stations 17 ABB vertical gearmotors (VGM) will power massive pumps supplied by Patterson Pump Co. The project also includes 17 ABB ACS 1000i and 5000i MV drives to control the pump start-up.

The VGM integrates proven Dodge planetary gear technology with ABB standard low-pole-count motors and is designed for low-speed vertical pumping applications with high-power requirements.  According to Mike Myers, Global Business Manager for Dodge specialty and large gearing, the product offered key advantages for the PCCP project.

Open University Study Programme for Pump Engineers

Next English programme starts in March 2018

The programme is an academic distance-learning study course with only two classroom courses to be attended (two weeks each). The free time management allows the participants to define their own pace of progress within the programme which corresponds to a time equivalent of approximately 400 hours. The course “Certified Energy Consultants for Pumps and Pump Systems” is integrated into the programme. Advantages:

Siemens: I/O extension module for converters

For the smallest converter in its portfolio, the Sinamics V20, Siemens is now offering an extension module for the capture and output of digital and analog signals. The Sinamics V20 I/O extension module is mounted on the converter using Plug&Play technology, and provides two additional input and output interfaces, each for 400 volts., increasing both the flexibility and the scope of the Sinamics V20. Using connecting ports on the front and back, the extension module can also be combined with additional accessories from the Sinamics V20 portfolio. These include for instance the BOP (Basic Operator Panel) and the BOP interface module.

Siemens Mechanical Drives Unit to become Flender GmbH

Starting October 1, 2017, the Siemens Mechanical Drives unit (MD) will be operating in the market as Flender GmbH, a Siemens Company. Branches will also take on the new name worldwide. The new setup is to be completed worldwide by mid-2018.

Siemens: All-steel multi-disk couplings acc. API and Atex

Siemens presented an additional series in the range of torsionally rigid all-steel disc couplings: the new N-Arpex coupling with improved performance characteristics. An optimized disc pack and a revised component design facilitate the transmission of higher torques and speeds as well as a higher bore capacity with standard hubs. All-steel couplings can be used in all applications that require reliable torque transmission in set-ups with shaft displacement.
