Technical Paper: API 676 compliance of progressive cavity pumps

Owing to their operating principle and their roots in waste water treatment, Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCP) come with typical deviations against petrochemical standard API 676. Some of these deviations are inevitable, others can be healed. It is a preservative headache and topic of discussion for project engineers to understand and identify which of these deviations are relevant, critical or acceptable for their project.

Water intake pumps to China’s mega-refinery

Over the past decades, international technology Group Andritz has become a byword for highest quality and customized pump solutions and is now a preferred partner on a global scale. In the interests of its customers, the Pumps division does not set itself any limits with regard to size and flow rate in the development and manufacturing of tailor-made pumps. Thus, Andritz has been commissioned to supply the water intake pumps for China’s first privately managed and largest petrochemical plant.

New plunger pump head reaches up to more than 1,000 bar

The plunger pumps feature an integrated gear, which enables very compact construction with maximum efficiency.

For the purpose of upgrading a cracker in a Chinese refinery a total of five plunger pump skids should be brought into operation by Lewa. Those in charge of the project opted for three triplex and two quintuplex plunger pumps in accordance with the API 674 standard. These pumps are equipped with the new KMC-L pump head with reduced clearance volume. This head consists of a single forging: The suction manifold is integrated as a result, allowing for a reduction in the sealing surface and thus in any potential leak points. An additional advantage is the fact that the suction side can be designed to handle backpressure, eliminating the need for a safety valve in the suction line. The new design makes it possible to realize pressures up to 1,075 bar. All pumps in use have been produced in Germany and mounted to a complete system in the Chinese plant.

These plunger pumps have a drive output of 260 kW and a flow rate of 25 m3/h. The suction pressure loss of the pump heads is very low, therefore a low suction pressure is needed and it is often possible to operate without a booster pump.

Heat transfer oil circulation pump acc. to DIN EN 733

The pump manufacturer Dickow has developed a new pump line NKX for circulation of thermal oil. The pump casing is designed for 16 bar and 350 °C. The new pump line extends the application limit of the previous NKLs-type. The new NKX will replace the series NKLs with exactly the same dimensions in future.

The NKX is used as a circulation pump for hot oils in industrial heating plants/units. The performance range covers capacities up to 400 m3/h and differential heads up to 90 m in 50 Hz services; and capacities up to 2,500 US-gpm and differential heads up to 400 ft in 60 Hz services. The dimensions and performance range of these centrifugal pumps are according to DIN EN 733, that means range is subdivided into different pump sizes in order to achieve best efficiency for all service conditions inside the envelope.

Sundyne: New low NPSHr, high-flow pump

sundyneThe Sundyne LMV-803Lr is an API 610 compliant pump available in either OH3 or OH5 motor mounting configuration that provides ultra-low NPSHr performance – approximately 5 ft (1.5 m), across the entire performance range – for flows to 800 GPM (180 m³ / hr) and heads to 1,000 ft (305 m).

The ultra-low NPSHr allows the pump to be installed at grade level, eliminating the expense of installation in a pit and performing maintenance in a confined space. The vertical design is ideal for use in refineries, NGL, petrochemical and chemical plants, as well as handling light hydrocarbon handling services, such as bottom pumps for de-ethanizers.

KEPL: Pumps for highly critical refinery application

IMAG1498KEPL has shipped the first set “5-stage BB3” pumps to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for J3 Project at Jamnagar in Gujarat, India. API 610 standard BB3 pumps are Between Bearing Axially-Split case pump.

BB3 pumps are designed for high temperature and high pressure fluid transfer applications. Its near-centreline mounting design makes the BB3 pump suitable for various refinery applications subjected to the ISO or API criteria for flammable hydrocarbons. The pumping temperatures range for the BB3 Pump is from 5 degree Celsius to 200 degree Celsius and its capacity is upto 2500 m³/h.
