Sulzer doubles capacity of high voltage testing to improve repair times

Thursday, January 11th, 2018 von admin

Performance testing of high voltage motors and generators is usually carried out to determine benchmark data following a major repair. However, increasingly, customers are requiring this information as part of a problem diagnosis or to verify performance figures for a component when its essential data has been lost. To keep up with growing demand, Sulzer has made a major investment at its Falkirk Service Center (Scotland) that will enable the test-bed load capacity to be doubled.

Until now, the Falkirk site has used a 1,250 kVA diesel generator that operates through two step-up transformers to provide 3.3 – 11 kV via high voltage switchgear to the test cell. This setup ensures a reliable power source for testing that is not affected by local demand on the power grid. The new investment will add a 2,000 kVA and a 700 kVA generator to the site that will be synchronized through a 4000A LV switchboard, as well as a new 2,500 kVA transformer, that will double the capacity of the test bed.

This new AODD pump is transferring blackwater onboard the hospital ship Africa Mercy, the largest civilian hospital ship in the world. Founded in 1978, Mercy Ships is a global charitable organization that operates a fleet of hospital ships specially designed for use in developing nations.

Many people in Africa have little or no access to healthcare. For nearly 40 years, Mercy Ships has delivered free services valued at more than $1 billion – directly impacting more than 2.5 million children and families. As a state-of-the-art hospital ship, the Africa Mercy brings volunteer medical teams and sterile operating rooms directly to people who would otherwise go without care.

Predicting Performance Curves of Centrifugal Pumps In the Absence of OEM Data

Chemical and Mechanical Engineers in the oil & gas industry often carry out the task of conducting technical studies to evaluate piping and pipeline systems during events such as pump trips and block valve failures that can lead to

  • pipes cracking at the welded joints,
  • pump impellers rotating in the reverse direction and
  • damaged pipe supports due to excessive vibrations

to name a few. Although much literature is available to mitigate such disturbances, a key set of data to conduct transient studies are pump performance curves. A pump performance curve is a plot between pump head and flow rate. In Greenfield projects, when no pump vendor data is available, a necessity arises to use performance curves to conduct pipeline/piping studies to check for parameters such as design pressure.
