VDMA at Achema: Pumps + Vacuum pumps meeting “Industry 4.0” demands

The future pump and vacuum pump is intelligent and digitally integrated, according to manufacturers joined at VDMA Pumps + Systems as well as VDMA Vacuum technology. At present manufacturers are developing an administration shell based upon existing information models. This shell, the digital twin, contains all data specifying a pump. „All requested realizations as for example an OPC UA companion specification can be directly deducted from information out of the administration shell. This is evident when developing a pump to meet “Industry 4.0” demands,“ informs Christoph Singrün, managing director at VDMA Pumps + Systems, in the run-up to the Achema in Frankfurt.

Converter handling simplified by new module for wireless commissioning

The new Sinamics G120 Smart Access Module enables the wireless connection of mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones or laptops over WiFi to the Sinamics G120, Sinamics G120C and Sinamics G120P pump converter series, making for considerably simpler converter handling.

The module is set up in a few simple steps using a conventional web browser and any standard operating system. The web server functionality eliminates the need to download any additional software. With its intuitively structured user interface and menu guidance, the module offers outstanding user convenience.

New plunger pump head reaches up to more than 1,000 bar

The plunger pumps feature an integrated gear, which enables very compact construction with maximum efficiency.

For the purpose of upgrading a cracker in a Chinese refinery a total of five plunger pump skids should be brought into operation by Lewa. Those in charge of the project opted for three triplex and two quintuplex plunger pumps in accordance with the API 674 standard. These pumps are equipped with the new KMC-L pump head with reduced clearance volume. This head consists of a single forging: The suction manifold is integrated as a result, allowing for a reduction in the sealing surface and thus in any potential leak points. An additional advantage is the fact that the suction side can be designed to handle backpressure, eliminating the need for a safety valve in the suction line. The new design makes it possible to realize pressures up to 1,075 bar. All pumps in use have been produced in Germany and mounted to a complete system in the Chinese plant.

These plunger pumps have a drive output of 260 kW and a flow rate of 25 m3/h. The suction pressure loss of the pump heads is very low, therefore a low suction pressure is needed and it is often possible to operate without a booster pump.

From pipe to component ready for installation

Individually produced, made to measure, in very small quantities or as a series – for years Butting from Knesebeck in Germany has been well known as a reliable supplier of special components ready for installation. In the course of time, countless product variations have been developed and manufactured together with the end customer – sometimes in series production.

True to the motto “more than pipes” the longitudinally welded stainless steel pipes from Bunttings in-house production usually serve as primary products for the components ready for installation. Corrosion resistant pipes, manufactured specially for the individual customer order, are used to produce these components. Thus special sizes or particular tolerances can be taken into account, such as production by internal diameter.  As part of prefabrication, laser, welding and forming technology are possible, as are cutting and surface processing by grinding and blasting, and combinations of these. Pumps for wet flue gas desulfurization

A cement factory in Texas was among the first in the USA  to install wet flue gas scrubbers in order to reduce the sulfur dioxide emissions. This is a demanding application for pumps because the gypsum slurry that “scrubs” the gas is highly abrasive and corrosive.

Special pumps with housings and impellers made of mineral cast prove to be a perfect solution here.

Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization Scrubber systems are a vital component in various industries due to strict environmental regulations. First applications were coal fired power plants and waste incineration plants. Today, other industries utilize wet scrubbers in their day to day operations as well to scrub flue gas emissions from burners that utilize coal as a fuel source.

Up to 33,000 m³/h

In response to the worldwide increase in large waste water projects, KSB has extended its range of large dry-installed waste water pumps. The pump manufacturer has developed an extra 15 sizes to add to its Sewatec pump series.

The maximum flow rate of the largest version will be up to 33,000 m³/h with a drive rating exceeding one megawatt.

An example of these pump sets will be showcased at the pump manufacturer’s trade fair stand at this year’s Ifat in Munich.

Hygienic high-pressure pumps for dairies

Gea presented its first high-pressure pump for membrane filtrations such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration in dairies at Anuga FoodTec 2018. The Hilge Hygia H is designed for system pressures up to 64 bar with outstanding cleanability characteristics and a modular motor connection.

The new high-pressure pump is based on the Hygia premium range of hygienic pumps, which has been proven for decades and is suitable for a large number of viscous fluids and applications as a result of its high surface quality and adaptability. It is designed to pump fluids as well as homogeneous media containing air or gas and withstands a system pressure of 64 bar. “40 bar is standard in the dairy industry”, says Martin Zickler, product manager for hygienic pumps at Gea.
