SPX: Hygienic pumps to match different process requirements
The need for hygienic pumps is widespread across industries such as dairy, food, beverage, pharmaceutical, biotech and cosmetics. The range of applications where they are used is diverse and, like other pump requirements, reliability is a major consideration to maximise productivity. Through its Waukesha Cherry-Burrell, APV and Johnson Pump brands, SPX Flow Technology has one of the widest ranges of pumps available in hygienic designs, developed from close partnership with our customers and an intense understanding of the applications in the industries.
Low slip, hygienic positive displacement (PD) pumps from the Waukesha Cherry-Burrell brand
Within the comprehensive range of SPX hygienic pumps are products from the Waukesha Cherry-Burrell brand (WCB). WCB offers a range of rotary PD pumps, Universal Series 1 and 2, that provide longevity and low slip performance. A unique, high-performing, non-galling rotor alloy is used, “Alloy 88”, which enables an exceptionally close fit between the rotors and pump body. This close fit and the geometry of the rotor ensures the low slip operation, even at low viscosities, while maintaining high volumetric efficiency.
The complete symmetry of the WCB PD pumps provides bi-directional flow without loss of performance. The large rotor fluid cavities and large anti-cavitation ports on the pumps can handle highly viscous fluids, slurries and large particles. WCB pumps are EHEDG approved for CIP duty and are fast and easy to disassemble and re-assemble for clean out of place (COP) applications, keeping downtime and maintenance costs to a minimum.
Close coupled Tru-Fit drive for reduced floor space, Rectangular Flange, Aseptic and MDL models are standard options. Optimum customer service includes the availability of WCB Certified Repair Centers and Remanufacturing programs.
The smooth pumping, C-Series from the Waukesha Cherry-Burrell brand are economically priced close-coupled pumps. The series comprises of five models with flow rates up to 180m3/hr. These rugged pumps have back plates and adapters machined from solid bar stock stainless steel for strength and long life. Less wear is experienced at the seal through use of a wave spring, which provides more uniform loading on the seal face. Hydraulic balancing further reduces sealing surface pressures to extend the seal life. The units have a clever design with no tools required to disassemble the pump, ensuring easy maintenance and quick inspection capability and, importantly, minimizing production downtimes and associated costs.
The 200 Series Waukesha Cherry-Burrell pumps utilize commercially available seal choices, including a cartridge type seal, and controlling the diameter of the impeller’s integral hub, one common mechanical seal size will fit all 12 pumps in the series – reducing inventory requirements. Precision construction eliminates the problems caused by vibration like, shortened bearing life, high net positive suction head (NPSH) requirements, seal maintenance costs and other adverse operating conditions.
The 200 Series pumps maintain hygienic performance with a unique impeller design, which ensures CIP solutions reach all critical areas of the pump and 316L stainless steel wetted components. Designed with maximum rigidity the 200Series pumps are ideal for a wide range of liquids. They can handle varying flow conditions and can be confidently installed in series without compromising seal. The broad application, easy maintenance and long life of these pumps make them an ideal choice in many hygienic processes.
APV centrifugal pumps
The choice of hygienic centrifugal pumps from SPX continues with an impressive range of APV pumps, which includes the W+ centrifugal pumps with ultra-hygienic design and high efficiency impellers. The original, state-of-the-art, patented SPX APV spiral volute located on the pump back plate further ensures maximum efficiency with direct transfer of liquid from inlet to outlet. These pumps run with exceptionally low noise and vibration levels while a heavy walled pump casing handles high system pressures. 17 standard models designed for system pressures up to 25 bar provide flow capacities up to 800 m3/hr (50 Hz). The wide choice of models enables a close match to the application requirements to maximise pumping efficiency.
Within the W+ range are specialist pumps for handling particularly challenging applications. The Whp+ provides efficient performance while withstanding pressures up to 60 bar. The Wi+ inducer pump boosts the inlet pressure, reduces the risk of cavitation and is ideal for applications with low NSPH throughout its entire capacity. The Wa+ aseptic pump has double seals throughout with special aseptic fittings for sterile flushing. The self-priming Ws+ is perfect where air or foam may be present in the fluid or for (clean in place) CIP applications and can be anywhere a traditional liquid ring pump is applied. All of these pumps provide hygienic design with 3A and EHEDG certification available. There innovative designs maximise efficiency and offer exceptional reliability to keep processes running for longer.
Complementing the W+ range are the APV Puma+ pumps, available in three standard models. These units provide reliable, cost-effective performance for standard, hygienic applications across industries such as brewery, beverage, food and dairy. All are available with double mechanical shaft seals, are simple to maintain and provide sanitary assurance through EHEDG approval.
Hygienic, rotary lobe pumps
Through its Johnson Pump brand, SPX adds to its hygienic pump offering with a range of sanitary, rotary lobe pumps.
Johnson Pump TopWing
The TopWing range is easy to clean by CIP and is completely SIP’able (sterilise in place). It has a lower shearing power than most standard lobe pumps, enabling the pumping of soft and hard substances without product degradation. Superior hygienic performance is provided through self-draining rotor case and shafts, stainless steel construction and smooth surfaces at all areas of product contact. The TopWing range has a choice of rotor options: Bi-wing or Multi-lobe. Bi-wing rotors provide exceptionally gentle, smooth performance, ideal for preventing damage to fluid with soft particles such as fruits. Multi-lobe rotors provide the ideal solution for applications requiring low noise and high speed, low pulsation for low viscosity fluids or low NSPH while providing reduced friction and energy loss.
TopWing pumps are designed for harsh environments. Completely made in stainless steel, they offer improved strength over other rotary lobe pumps, have a water resistant gear case with special seals and include an air breather on the oil chamber with back valve and labyrinth sealing. They can withstand rapid changes in temperature and harsh CIP/SIP cycles.
Johnson Pump TopLobe
SPX Johnson Pump TopLobe pumps provide a hygienic pumping solution with fast and easy maintenance. The rotor design ensures gentle product handling with no risk of product entrapment, assuring hygiene standards are maintained. Fewer interruptions to production are seen where these products are utilised as they have less dead spaces than other lobe pumps. TopLobe pumps offer good efficiency for both high and low viscosity applications. They provide gentle, efficient operation with low noise levels.
Front loading product seals are situated directly behind the seal cover on a TopLobe pump, enabling quick access for easy service and maintenance. A shim-free assembly ensures good lubrication of bearings and gears and enables high-speed operation. The TopLobe pump is yet another example of innovation and design excellence from SPX delivering reliable performance and reduced maintenance for maximum production efficiency and reduced cost of ownership.
The latest addition to the Johnson Pump brand range is the TLP lobe pump. Specifically designed for OEMs, there are nine, cost-effective models combining some of the best features from the TopLobe and APV DW product range. The TLP pumps provide robust, consistent displacement with only low shearing and gentle handling of product. Double mechanical seals also mean the pumps can run dry indefinitely.
The TLP series provides versatile mounting and a robust construction in a hygienic design and is suitable for high and low viscosity products. The units have no internal rotor contact with a unique rotor attachment to the shafts utilizing lug screws to provide a backlash-free connection that is easy to access and service.
