Pump driving universally and individually
The market for drive controllers provides customers a wide range of products – some are standardised, others get adapted individually. The combination of a favourable large scale production with the advantages of customer specific adaption can be decisive for a purchase decision.
In many purchase decisions potential customers have to face the same dilemma again and again: either they have to refer to standardised products which satisfy their individual needs only limitedly, or to have a customised product made under high additional effort. Also the drive technology draws the same picture. On the one hand, big companies offer a broad product portfolio which covers numerous applications. On the other hand, they allow customer-specific adjustments of these standardised products only within narrow limits. For example, in many cases drive controllers have a high functionality which potential customers don’t use in its wide extent. On the opposite other suppliers are specialised on drive controllers which are laid out for narrow fields. Here customer specific adjustments are enabled in general, but also in this case – mostly due to only small purchase quantities – they are not in a balanced cost-benefit-ratio. Furthermore, it can be observed that in both cases mainly central drive controllers in form of control cabinets are available on the market.
Assume good characteristics
Based on these observations Kostal Industrial Electronics from Hagen identified a market niche and closed it with its drive controller platform Inveor. Now potential customers can benefit from the economies of scale in production without having to dispense individual preferences. Moreover, these are decentralised drive controllers. For this decision there are at least three central reasons.
First: In almost every company the importance of energy efficiency increases. So it is of great significance to economise with given energy resources as careful as possible, especially as the decrease of energy consumption also reduces own costs. In those circumstances it is indispensable to regulate processes which are permanently in operation according to performance. Exemplary processes for this can be found particularly during operations of pumps, ventilators and compressors. Generally the speed control can take place centralised or decentralised. The reason for a decentralised version can be their good EMC characteristics. This advantage results due to the fact that – with direct mounting of the drive controller onto the motor – the motor lines that are necessary for centralised systems become invalid.
Secondly: Beside this aspect decentralised drive controller offer the possibility to increase the degree of automation in the production. On one hand the operator can automate manual processes with the help of a drive controller. On the other hand there is a possibility to record further process operation data. Thanks to the easier management (simpler installation, saving of additional components) decentralised drive controller seem to be superior here, as well.
Last but not least the use of decentralised drive controller and their field bus option enables to transfer the process data directly to the control system. For example signal and temperature values can be further processed fast and reliably.
